Faculty of Medicine - Historical Flashback

The Faculty of Medicine was founded in 1985 in Larissa. At first, it was established in the refurbished building of the former “Katsigra Clinic” and later also in two hired buildings. In 2008, new buildings (the University campus) for the Faculty of Medicine were erected on 100,000 m2 in the area of Mezourlo, which was granted by the Municipality of Larissa during the Mayoralty of A. Lamproulis. The Faculty of Medicine was launched 20 years ago with a very small number of faculty members and rudimentary infrastructure, welcoming the first students in September 1990. It is the newest in Greece and in comparison with other Faculties or Medical Schools it has the smallest number of faculty members (96 active and 37 under evaluation or nomination). Since 1999, the University Hospital of Larissa has been functioning as a tertiary unit, one of the most modern in the country, with 690 beds.
