The Department of Medicine and Research Laboratory of Internal Medicine offers a variety of educational opportunities for medical students, residents and fellows. The Department is proud of its strong educational mission, training the next generation of physicians through rigorous residency and fellowship programs.
Undergraduate Educational Program
The Department of Medicine and Research Laboratory of Internal Medicine of the University of Thessaly is responsible of the following compulsory under-graduate lessons, including practical training and lectures: Propaedeutic in Medicine (5th semester), Internal Medicine I (6th semester), Internal Medicine Clerkship (11th & 12th semester).
Residency Program
The Residency Program (total course 5 years) of the Department of Medicine and Research Laboratory of Internal Medicine of the University of Thessaly is dedicated to educate and prepare physicians in a variety of medical disciplines through curricula which reflect an appropriate balance of patient care, education, and research and to help each resident achieve his or her ultimate carrier goal after residency. The program is designed to encourage science and humanity in the practice of Medicine and offers a broad spectrum of clinical, educational and research opportunities.
Residents are scheduled in carefully selected inpatient and outpatient venues, where they provide care to a highly diverse patient population under the guidance of faculty members with effective teaching skills. They are exposed continuously to quality care practices and serve as Internists for their own panel of patients. Features of the Internal Medicine Residency Program include attending rounds, morning report, resident rotations, duties in the Emergency Department Unit and participation in the postgraduate educational program.
After completing the 5-years course, Internal Medicine residents take written and oral exams for Internal Medicine Board Certification performed by the Department of Medicine and Research Laboratory of Internal Medicine. Of note, written exams are also performed almost twice a year in an attempt to seek for in-resident and/or teaching problems.
Postgraduate Educational Program
A Postgraduate Educational Program is very intense during residency and organized annually with monthly lectures by invited speakers, weekly presentations of interesting cases and analysis of the underlying diseases, educational journal clubs, and inter-clinic meetings with the Laboratory of Pathology and the Radiology Department of the University of Thessaly. Our Postgraduate Medical Educational program emphasizes in providing organized and academically rigorous programs of education which foster physicians’ professional development as skilled, ethical, and compassionate clinicians, sensitive and capable of meeting the challenges of a changing healthcare environment and assuring high quality patient care.
Clinical Hepatology Fellowship
The Department of Medicine and Research Laboratory of Internal Medicine offers Clinical Hepatology Fellowship that includes vigorous training in liver outpatient and inpatient settings. The goal of the program is to create clinical hepatologists who possess a range of attributes including the knowledge of basic pathophysiology, clinical manifestations, and management of liver diseases, indications and contradictions to liver transplant, diagnostic liver biopsy procedures, and appreciation of the humanistic and ethical aspects of liver disease.
Doctoral (PhD) Programs
The Department of Medicine and Research Laboratory of Internal Medicine offers various doctoral training programs leading to the Ph.D. degree. These programs are focused on the research fields of the Department and require instructional course work and laboratory practice, and the submission and defense of an original research dissertation. So far, 19 PhD theses have been completed successfully and 15 are in progress.
