Ergospirometry
is an important non-invasive test, which allows the objective monitoring of respiratory, cardiovascular and metabolic function during exercise. It is used to assess physical condition and for the differential diagnosis between cardiovascular and respiratory diseases. Specifically, it contributes: to the investigation of dyspnea or reduced ability to exercise (and to determine the cause of their occurrence), to the identification of cardiovascular or respiratory dysfunctions, which are revealed only during exercise, to the investigation of the cause of various symptoms (e.g. dyspnea, angina) as well as to the assessment of the ability to exercise and physical activity. It is also used in the preoperative screening of patients with a history of cardiorespiratory diseases. Finally, ergospirometry is considered a valuable method for assessing the physical condition and performance of athletes, for investigating the possibility of its improvement, and for determining the training program with the aim of improving performance.
