The Postgraduate Program treats the scientific field of vascular diseases and in particular the application of ultrasound in their diagnosis and treatment. It aims to cultivate and promote the high level of education and solid training of health professionals in the prudential control, diagnosis and functional investigation of vascular diseases and post-invasive monitoring for the benefit of patients and the improvement of the quality of health services provided at low cost.

The MSc “Vascular Ultrasound in Diagnosis and Management” deals with the application of colour Doppler ultrasound in the diagnosis and treatment of vascular diseases. The modern approach has incorporated bloodless diagnostics and minimally invasive treatment in vascular diseases into daily practice and therefore the use of ultrasound plays a key role.

The MSc utilizes frontier research in the application of ultrasound in the diagnosis and treatment of vascular diseases through the review of the international literature, which is used both in the redefinition of the educational objects of the program and in the writing of the dissertations. Also, a critical approach of new technology in the field of ultrasound is attempted in order to explore possibilities for participation in competitive research projects drawing national and European resources. Finally, the deepening of students’ knowledge contributes to the improvement of the quality of health services provided to the community.

This specific subject of the MSc concerns the bloodless diagnosis of vascular diseases using ultrasound and is of interest to many medical specialties and health professionals such as vascular surgeons, radiologists, cardiologists, pathologists, neurologists, etc. and requires a comprehensive knowledge of the anatomy, physiology and hemodynamics of the vascular system as well as the properties and characteristics of ultrasound imaging. Vascular diseases are one of the most important causes of morbidity and mortality in Western societies. In 2019, an estimated 17.9 million people died from cardiovascular disease, accounting for 32% of global mortality. According to World Health Organization (WHO) estimates, nearly 75% of premature cardiovascular deaths are preventable. Today, ultrasound of the vessels is available in primary care structures as well as in Secondary and Tertiary Hospitals and is the first line of preventive screening and early diagnosis of vascular diseases. Both in the public and private sectors there is a significant demand for qualified medical staff who have knowledge of ultrasound of the vessels. It is also a useful training for those involved in ultrasound technology in private companies.
