Born in Thessaloniki (1965), graduate of German School of Thessaloniki (1982/German Abitur distinction). After succeeding to National Exams he enrolled in the Medical School of Aristotelion University of Thessaloniki where he obtained his Medical Degree in 1988 (distinction).

He was awarded the scholarship of German Academy of Sciences (DAAD) and obtained Dr Med in Obstetrics and Gynecology, University Hospital Grosshadern Munich “magna cum laude” (1988-1990). He completed his registrar time in Johannesburg (South Africa, University of Witwatersrand).

After successful exams at the College of Obstetricians and Gynecologists (FCOG) of South Africa he was appointed as Consultant and Lecturer (1996) and was further promoted to Senior Lecturer and Head of Unit at the Department of Obstetrics and Gynaecology in University Hospital of Witwatersrand, Johannesburg. He returned to Greece in August 2001 as a Lecturer in the University of Thessaly. In 2003, he spent additional 7 months of subspecialty training as a Specialist Registrar in the Department of Gynecologic Oncology, Royal Marsden Hospital in London.

He is currently Professor and Head of the Department of Obstetrics and Gynaecology (since 2014) at the University of Thessaly (57 beds, 1500 deliveries), which is accredited by the European Board and College of Obstetrics and Gynaecology (EBCOG) as a European Training Centre in Obstetrics and Gynaecology. His field of interest are gynecologic oncology, HPV, early pregnancy, pelvic surgery, high risk obstetrics and Biomarkers in O&G.

Professor Daponte has authored more than 100 papers in peer review journals and several chapters in books with h-index = 23 (Google Scholar citations). He is supervising several PhDs and is the Director of the Postgraduate Master Degree with the title “Biomarkers in Obstetrics and Gynaecology – Biology of Reproduction – Perinatal Medicine”.

Professor Daponte is chairing the specialist’s exams in central Greece from 2014 till today. Also, he is a member of Greek and international scientific associations. Currently serves as the President of the Greek – German association of Obstetricians and Gynaecologists (DGGG).

Apart from the German Academy Scholarship DAAD (1988-1990) has been honored in 2000 with the FIGO International Fellowship of the American College of Obstetricians and Gynecologists (ACOG) for further training in Los Angeles (UCLA, USC). In 2004 he was awarded the Procter & Gamble award for a research protocol for detection of human papillomavirus (HPV).
