Η Equal Access Unit People with disabilities and people with special educational needs of the University of Thessaly is a development of ACCESS-Support structure for students with disabilities and/or special educational needs. In 2010, within the framework of the targeted actions of the Research Committee of the University of Thessaly, a program was approved and funded with the scientific responsibility of Ms. Magda Nikolaraizi, Associate Professor of Special Education-Education of the Deaf, entitled "«Access of students with special needs to the physical and learning environment of the University of Thessaly»". This specific program highlighted the need for systematic support for the student population with disabilities and/or special educational needs of the University of Thessaly in accessibility issues and led in 2012 to the creation of the structure "«ACCESS-Structure for supporting students with disabilities and/or special educational needs" by decision of the Senate of the University of Thessaly (minutes of meeting 105/11-5-2012). The Vice-Rector for Academic Affairs and Personnel, Mr. Ioannis Theodorakis, Professor of the Department of Physical Education and Sports Science, was responsible for the Structure. The scientific responsibility of the Structure was assumed by Ms. Magda Nikolaazi and an 8-member committee of faculty members was also created, which consisted of the scientific head, 3 faculty members from the Pedagogical Departments, 1 faculty member from the Department of Medicine, 1 faculty member from the Technical University, 1 faculty member from the Faculty of Agricultural Sciences, and 1 faculty member from the Faculty of Veterinary Medicine.
