Konstantinos N. Vemmos is a Pathologist, with specialization and exclusive interest since 1989 in the prevention and treatment of Vascular Strokes (Stroke Medicine)

He graduated from the School of Medicine of the University of Athens in 1974, after passing entrance exams in 1968.

He obtained the specialty of Pathology in the Therapeutic Clinic in 1981.

He trained for one year in Cardiology at the same clinic (1982).

He served at the Therapeutic Clinic of the University of Athens at the "Alexandra" Hospital for 34 years from 1978 to 2012 as a specialist, internal assistant, curator and then Director of the NHS.

During the years 1991-1992, he trained at the Neurological Clinic (Stroke Service Fellow) of the University Hospital New England Medical Center, TUFTS University, USA, with the subject of strokes.

In 1989, under the supervision of Professor Moulopoulos, the 1st stroke unit in Greece was established at the "Alexandra" hospital, the clinical responsibility of which was assigned to Mr. Vemmos.

The unit was reorganized in 1992 under the supervision of Mr. Vemmos. From 1992 to 2012 he was the Director of the Acute Vascular Stroke Unit of the Therapeutic Clinic of the "Alexandra" Hospital. During this time, more than 7,000 stroke patients were treated.

Regular member of European Stroke Organization and World Stroke Organization.

He is a founding member of the Hellenic Cardiovascular Research Society, co-editor of the journal "HEART VESSELS & BRAIN" and co-organizer of the "Heart, Vessels & Stroke" conference.

Elected chairman of the board of the Hellenic Stroke Organization from 2015 until today.

He is a founding member of the Institute for Study and Education in Thrombosis and Antithrombotic Treatment (IMETHA) and a member of the Board. He participates in the editorial board of the journal Cerebrovascular Diseases.

He is the author or co-author of more than 161 scientific articles in the international bibliography with more than 5,000 references.

Important contribution to the international literature with several articles on the study of blood pressure in the acute phase of strokes with 2 references to the latest American guidelines.

Internationally established studies are also 2 stroke registries: a) Arcadia Stroke Registry a population study and b) The Athens Stroke Registry (>90 articles in the international literature).

He has participated in international conferences with more than 200 scientific announcements and has given in recent years more than 300 lectures on the topic of strokes.

Main topics of his scientific research are: acute phase and organization of treatment of strokes, epidemiology of strokes, risk factors and strokes, atrial fibrillation and strokes, prognostic indicators of acute strokes, etc.

He is still a reviewer in many international medical journals (Stroke, Neurology, International J of Stroke, Eur. J Neurol, Cerebrovasc. Dis, etc) and has authored scientific book chapters as well as a large number of journal and newspaper articles.
