Brief Biography
I was born in Kavala. I graduated from the School of Medicine of the Aristotle University of Thessaloniki where I was admitted after passing the Panhellenic exams (1982-88). I specialized in Hematology at Theageneio Cancer Hospital, Thessaloniki (1992-96).
During my residency at the Hematology Clinic of Thes/nikis Theageneio Cancer Hospital, I gained a lot of experience both in laboratory hematology (peripheral blood smear assessment, marrow, peripheral blood and marrow immunophenotype. hematopoietic cell cultures) and in the treatment of hematological malignancies ( leukemias, lymphomas, multiple myeloma).
In 2002, I was sworn in as a doctor of the Medical Department of the School of Health Sciences of the AUTH. I worked as a Hematology Supervisor at the Hospital of Veria, Papageorgiou, Agios Pavlos and Hippocrates, Thessaloniki. In 2010 I was elected Hematology Lecturer of the Medical Department of the School of Health Sciences, AUTH. In 2015 I was elected Assistant Professor and in 2021 Deputy Professor of Hematology-Hemoglobin Diseases. I work at the B Pathology Clinic, AUTH, at the Hippocrates Hospital of Thessaloniki and I am in charge of the Mediterranean and Sickle Cell Anemia Unit and the Hematology Department of the B Pathology Clinic. In my more than 20 years of work as a hematologist I have dealt with the whole range of benign and malignant hematology cases.
I retrained in Molecular Biology at Saint George's Hospital, London (2005) and in Sickle Cell Disease at Homerton Hospital, London (2017).
My scientific interest mainly concerns hemoglobinopathies, hemolytic anemias and hemoironization. I have published 90 papers in prestigious foreign language journals (Efthymia Vlachaki – Google Scholar) 10 in Greek journals, several papers were presented at international and Greek conferences, and I participated in the writing of 4 chapters in scientific Greek books. I am a principal investigator in 12 clinical studies. I am a member of the European Society of Hematology, the Hellenic Society of Hematology and the Hellenic Society of Immunology.
