Spyropoulos Alex

Professor Alex Spyropoulos was born in Athens in 1963. He is married with two children.

He is a graduate of Medicine from the University of Pennsylvania, located in Philadelphia, USA, with registration as a University Fellow. He continued his education in Albuquerque, New Mexico, USA and in 1996 obtained the title of Pathology specialty.

In 2013 he became a Professor of Pathology at the University of Manhattan, New York, in 2016 he was a Professor at the Merinoff Center for Patient-Centered Research, of the Feinstein Institute for Medical Research, New York, and since 2017 he has been a Professor at the Center for Research on Health Innovation and Outcomes of the same Institute. He is also Director of the Antithrombotic and Clinical Thrombosis Services at University Hospital Northwell Health System in Staten Island, New York.

From 2014 he became a Member of the Institute for Study and Education in Thrombosis and Antithrombotic Education based in Athens. He is an Executive Member of the Board of Directors of the World Hellenic Biomedical Association and participates in the Organizing Committee of the International Meetings on Thrombosis: Basic, Laboratory, and Clinical Aspects of Venous and Arterial Thromboembolic Disease.

He is Vice-Chairman of the Scientific and Standardization Subcommittee of the International Society for Thrombosis and Haemostasis (ISTH), Vice-Chairman of the Scientific and Standardization Subcommittee on Postoperative Thrombosis and Haemostasis of the International Society for Thrombosis and Haemostasis, as well as Member of the Coordinating Committee for World Thrombosis Day of the International Society for Thrombosis and Haemostasis.

Professor Alex Spyropoulos is one of the best-known scientists worldwide in the research of thrombosis and antithrombotic treatment, having received grants from major organizations for this purpose. Together with the also distinguished Greek Professor of Pathology James Douketis, he has been engaged and recognized worldwide as a prominent figure in the field of Perioperative Management of Antithrombotic Treatment, authoring important publications and guidelines. He also specializes in the management of thromboembolic disease, as well as the evaluation of new antithrombotic therapies and new oral anticoagulants for thromboembolic disease. As a Member of the Executive Committee of the World Hellenic Institute of Biomedicine, he promoted scholarships for approximately 500 Hellenic Biomedical Organizations worldwide and as a Member of the World Thrombosis Day Coordinating Committee, he promotes global awareness to reduce death and disability from thromboembolic disease. Also, Professor Alex Spyropoulos has developed a long collaboration with the Greek scientific medical community. It is worth noting that he was born in Athens, while he loves Greece as his homeland.
